Autumn Approaching - Preparing for the Change in Seasons

As the warm weather and clear skies of summer begin to roll of the throttle, autumn brings a fresh set of opportunities and challenges for motorcyclists, but cooler temperatures, lower light and wetter roads don't have to mean putting your bike away until the sun comes back, because with the right preparation, maintenance and riding approach, you can continue enjoying every mile safely and confidently all year round. Here are our expert tips to help keep you and your Kawasaki ready for whatever autumn and winter have in store.

Maintenance: Key Checks for the Months Ahead

During autumn and winter, we check these five key areas before every ride to ensure our bikes are safe and ready to ride no matter the conditions. Alongside these points, regular servicing and maintenance following the owners manual is more vital than ever in harsher conditions, and should not be ignored.

Tyres
Tyres become even more important as temperatures drop and road surfaces become wet, muddy or covered in fallen leaves. Check pressures regularly using a reliable pressure gauge, inspect tread depth across the entire tyre, and look out for any tears, punctures or foreign objects stuck in the tyre. Correct tyre pressures, which can be found in your owners manual, help maximise grip, stability and tyre life. If your tyres are approaching their wear or age limits, now is the ideal time to speak with your local Kawasaki dealer about replacement options before winter conditions arrive.

Battery
Cold weather places additional strain on motorcycle batteries, particularly if your bike is used less frequently. Check battery terminals for corrosion and ensure they are tight and clean. If the motorcycle will not be ridden regularly, consider using an approved battery conditioner. Your local Kawasaki dealer can also perform a battery health check to identify any issues before a preventable battery fault leaves you stranded on a cold morning ride.

Chain and Final Drive
Autumn roads often contain more dirt, moisture and road grime, making chain maintenance particularly important during this season. It is vital to clean, lubricate, and set the tension of your chain regularly and according to your owner's manual, paying close attention after wet or salty rides. Maintaining the correct chain tension and lubrication will also improve performance while reducing wear, contributing to both a longer chain life and better overall ride quality.

Brakes
Reliable braking performance is paramount when road conditions become unpredictable. Check brake pad thickness, make sure the caliper piston reciprocates smoothly, inspect the discs for excessive wear and ensure brake fluid is within service intervals. Any concerns should be addressed immediately by an authorised Kawasaki dealer.

Lights and Visibility
With shorter daylight hours approaching, lighting becomes increasingly important. Regularly test all lights and indicators, clean lenses and replace any failed bulbs (if applicable) promptly. Being seen is often just as important as seeing.

While performing regular owner maintenance is essential, there is no substitute for having your motorcycle inspected by a trained Kawasaki technician. Our extensive Kawasaki dealer network is on hand to provide servicing, health checks, tyre replacement, battery testing and lots more, coupled with expert advice to ensure your machine remains in peak condition all year round.

Riding: Adapting to Autumn and Winter Conditions

The fundamentals of safe riding remain the same, but autumn and winter require a more considered approach. Allow extra distance for braking, reduce speed where visibility is limited and be particularly cautious around wet leaves, mud, standing water, road markings, drain covers, and early morning frost.

Road conditions can change rapidly at this time of year. Shaded areas may remain damp long after surrounding roads have dried, while lower temperatures can reduce available grip during the first few miles of a journey. Smooth throttle, braking and steering inputs are the best way to remain in total control and will inspire more confidence to ride in all conditions.

Equally important is rider comfort. Staying warm and dry helps maintain concentration, reduces fatigue and allows you to enjoy riding for longer. Planning routes and rest stops carefully and checking weather forecasts before travelling can make every ride more enjoyable, safer, and rewarding.

Accessories: Equip Your Kawasaki for the Season

Recommended autumn and winter accessories include Heated Grips, a Touring Screen, Fog Lights, Hand Guards, Accessory Power Outlets and Practical Luggage Solutions.

Heated Grips are among the most popular genuine Kawasaki accessories, helping to keep hands warm and comfortable on colder rides while reducing fatigue during longer journeys.

Touring Screens can offer increased wind protection, helping reduce buffeting and rider fatigue while improving comfort during motorway and longer-distance riding.

Fog Lights enhance visibility in poor weather and low-light conditions, helping riders see more clearly while also improving their presence on the road.

Hand Guards provide additional protection from cold wind and rain, while Accessory Power Outlets allow riders to power navigation devices or charge equipment during longer trips.

For commuters and tourers alike, Kawasaki luggage solutions offer practical weather-resistant storage for everyday essentials, making autumn and winter journeys more convenient.

And Finally... Enjoy It!

Autumn and winter riding can be every bit as rewarding as summer motorcycling when approached with the right preparation. Regular maintenance, sensible riding adjustments and the right genuine Kawasaki accessories can make a significant difference to safety, comfort and enjoyment. Most importantly, remember that your local Kawasaki dealer is your best resource for servicing, health checks, replacement tyres, batteries, genuine accessories and any expert support you may need. Whatever the weather, our dealer network is here to help keep you and your Kawasaki ready for the road ahead.
